Aspiring models: “having what it takes” takes more than just good looks

All the ladies, aspiring models and fashionistas out there:

Yes, you do have beauty, charm, and wits. But for models, having “what it takes” does mean more than just having good looks…

It doesn’t matter your age and your level of beauty, if you don’t have the professional attitude that comes with modeling, you will loose opportunities. Would you like to make a career of modeling or just rock this photo session? Then read on, and follow these tips; they will set you up for success!

Prep: acting like a pro and learning how to pose

  1. Modeling experience: it’s not given to anyone to know how to respond to the camera. Although it probably comes naturally to you, there are certain considerations to keep in mind. Follow these model posing tips, then let the creativity begin!
  2. The right pose: Try the 1-2-3 posing technique. If you don’t know how to hold yourself, go for a classic, winner starting pose that is sure to impress.
  3. Natural poses are best: As seen above, looking natural is the key. Unless you are shooting a diva stance on purpose, you do not want to look strained, theatrical, or too focused on the task. Make sure to rest your eyes in between poses and keep the poses light and nonchalant.
  4. Learn from the pros: Make sure to observe what professional models do, and learn from them. You can also learn about what other members of the team do, so that you will be on the same page the day of the photo shoot.
  5. Practice in front of your mirror: We all have our good angles and favorite sides, so get to know your face. Discover what angles look most flattering, and which facial expressions make you look good, then expand on these.
  6. Modeling slang: It is important to understand the slang used in modeling and in photography. For a quick reminder, here’s a glossary of modeling and common photography terms.

D-day tips for models

  1. Body measurements: If we are to provide clothing and accessories, please give us your most recent body measurements, so we can prepare accordingly.
  2. Music and mood setting: Tell us your favorite choice of music as well as your diet habits (veg, non veg, hate tuna…) so we can plan mood and catering. The more relax and at home you feel, the better the outcome.
  3. Preserve your beauty sleep: As a rule of thumb, develop a good sleeping habit. In any case, have a good restorative sleep on the evening of the shoot.
  4. Have fun: When all that is done, all is left is for all of us to have some fun during the photoshoot! I promise, confidence and happiness go a long way in making a photo stand out from the rest!

I hope these 10 tips help you feel prepared and confident for your photoshoot. If you haven’t already, go ahead and reserve a session with us to build up your portfolio. We will plan a photo shoot on location or at the studio, and hire a make-up artist to make you look your best!

Happy photo shoot :)
